Design Brief
It is such an exciting project to work with One Red Dot and champagne maker Yves Ruffin on creating the brand of an exquisite vintage where art, philosophy, and science emerge.
Recently, I have been instilling Chinese elements into my artworks, and the design for this particular vintage 2013 draws inspiration from the Qian hexagram of the Chinese philosophical text I–Ching. It symbolizes the primal force in the universe and signifies the initiation of a creative new endeavor towards harmony and balance in achieving self-sustainability.
When I met Ms. Sylvie Ruffin in 2019, I discovered Yves Ruffin was one of the four pioneer vineyards back in 1971 to engage in organic viticulture. I hold tremendous respect and admiration for their visionary approach at such an early stage. It particularly resonates with me as my family business focuses on innovative agricultural technology solutions. The purpose is to help with the world’s food shortage problems and achieve sustainability. The vineyard emanates a powerful force of nature and universal positive energy, absolutely symbolizing the unique representation of “Qian” or “The Creative”.
Thus the art direction not only incorporates my spatial and lighting design but also applies the unique geometrical elements of hexagram and yao superimposed with the Avenay-Val-d'Or’s natural landscapes and mountainous surroundings. The metaphor of its immense energy at the vineyard perfectly aligned with the concept of Qian.
